After a 3-HR debut, how to buy a prospect auto without buying the spike

By Sunday morning, his autograph cards were all over eBay. Many were under $500. Some were pack autos from Topps or Panini. Some were base cards that a person handed him at a show or a signing.

That mix is normal after a debut. Your job is to name the card before you bid.

Two kinds of auto

A certified auto comes in the pack. Topps, Panini, or Leaf put the signature on the card and sold it as an autograph card. Look for Autograph, AU, CPA, or PA in the set name or the card number.

An in-person auto is a signature on a regular card. A collector or a dealer got the player to sign it later. People write IP, signed, or in person in the title. The card number is often a base number, such as BCP-112 or BP-112.

Both can be real ink. Only the certified auto has the company process behind it. Pay the extra money only when you want that process.

What 1st Bowman means

1st Bowman is the first Bowman card of that player. It is not the same as a Topps rookie card.

For Baez, the 2022 Bowman Chrome Prospect Autograph (card number CPA-JB) is the certified 1st Bowman auto. The 2022 Bowman Chrome Prospect (card number BCP-112) is the 1st Bowman base card. Collectors often get BCP-112 signed in person.

If a title says 1st Bowman Auto, open the photo. Read the card number. CPA-JB is the pack auto. BCP-112 with a signature is an in-person auto.

How to shop the first 48 hours

1. Search the player name and the set. Do not search only the word signed.
2. Read the card number in the title and on the card.
3. Treat an in-person auto as a signed base card. Price it that way.
4. Add shipping to the bid or to the Buy It Now price.
5. Use eBay Authenticity Guarantee on a higher-priced certified auto when the listing offers it.
6. Do not buy the first listing. Three sold prices beat one rushed Buy It Now.

Those prices will move. The method does not.

A short rule

After a debut, the feed fills with every card that has a name and a pen. Buy the card you can name.

Certified pack auto, or in-person base. 1st Bowman auto, or 1st Bowman base with ink. If you cannot name it, wait.

You will miss some spikes. You will also miss fewer mistakes.
